An individual mass of Wood Frog eggs, attached to underwater grasses in a vernal pool. These softball-sized egg masses may each contain 700 or more eggs. Females often lay eggs in the same area of a vernal pool as others do, and large mats of egg mass tend to result. In this pool, most eggs were deposited on the south-facing edge, likely so the tadpoles could develop under the warmth of the spring sun. (Herald / Seth Butler)
