Wood frogs mate while floating at the surface of a vernal pool near Bowman Road in Barnard, where ice was still present in the center of the pond. One of the first anurans to come out of hibernation and begin breeding, these unique frogs are well adapted to the cold, and hibernate deep in muddy soils, where they have reportedly been found to survive winter temperatures as low as zero degrees Fahrenheit.
