Remodeling a kitchen in an older Vermont home can involve a great deal more than plaster, paint, cabinets, appliances, and flooring choices. Sistered to another beam in the timber framed loft, it will reinforce a long span above the open-plan kitchen below for decades to come. (Herald / Bob Eddy)
