Hannah Thein, the new Principal at the Barnard Academy, poses for a portrait under the awning of the school's recently revamped outdoor classroom. Having grown up working on a farm in Vermont, she discussed her impetus in seeking to teach greater reverence and understanding of the natural world, saying, "We need to have a real appreciation and love for nature, in order to do the work that it takes to sustain it. We are stewards of our planet and we need to install that in kids. If they don't get it like I did on the farm, then we need to do it in schools." (Herald / Seth Butler)
