Tuesday, in the heart of this heat wave, was Ashley Hallock's first day flagging traffic on Elm Street in Randolph. Doug Collins Jr., of Barton, a veteran of five years, advises staying hydrated. "I drink more than ten bottles of water on these really hot days." When not directing traffic for ten hours at a time, Collins is readying a 2006 Subaru Outback for the demolition derby at the Barton Fair. For her part, Hallock enjoys fishing. "I just caught a nice bass in Curtis Pond up in Calais." (Herald / Bob Eddy)
