AMERICAN ICONIC | In red, white and blue splendor, a 19050s 'Esso' sign graces a barn-red and white shed amidst blue shadow on a back road in Braintree. This particular sign was salvaged in the early 70s by Danny and Genie Robbins when 'Esso' service stations were being supplanted by 'Exxon' and 'Mobil.' The word "Esso" was created in 1911 from the phonetic spelling of the letters "S" and "O," when John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil, found in violation of anti-trust legislation, was broken into 34 separate corporations. (Herald / Bob Eddy)
