Purple survey boxes from the Department of Agriculture can be seen hanging from many ash trees in the area like this one in East Randolph. The boxes are up to detect the presence of emerald ash borer, a non-native beetle, that has been identified as the causal agent in ash tree decline and mortality in 14 other states.
