First Skater | After warm weather over the New Year's Day weekend, the sharp cold the arrived on Monday of this week was enough to finalize the freezing of the ice rink in Vershire, and it is now officially open for use. On Monday evening, the surface was slightly pebbly, but certainly skate-able. Ken Bushey, who spearheaded the rink project, tried out the new resurfacing apparatus, which consisted of a trashcan filled with water. A hose was attached to the can near the bottom, ending in a small boom with a piece of cloth that evenly distributed the water as it was released from the hose while the can was pulled across the ice. This improvised Zamboni seemed to work well, and the cold temperatures Monday evening were sure to freeze the ice quickly. (Herald / Laura Craft)
